How We Raise Our Puppies
Starting your puppy off on the right paw from the beginning.
Newborn Puppy Curriculum
Often people underestimate the development that happens in the first few weeks of a puppy's life. Every day is critical for a puppy's growth and development. You may have had dogs with behavioral issues in the past and wonder the causation. A portion of this can be due to genetics or breeding, but a larger part, we believe, is nurture - or their environment, especially their first few weeks of life.
At Southern Standard Doodles, we strive to provide the most loving and hygienic space inside our home, for our puppies to thrive.

Once puppies are born and settled in we start their ENS (early neurological stimulation) and ESI (early scent introduction).

ENS was developed by the military. ENS puppy training consists of different body handling exercises. It introduces puppies to mild forms of stimulation and stressors. These stimulations can kick start their neurological system and improve their natural abilities.
The exercises are preformed during the puppies' neonatal period starting on day three from birth and lasting until days sixteen. Studies have shown the benefits of ENS include: improved cardiovascular performance (heart rate), stronger heart beats, stronger adrenal glands, more tolerance to stress, greater resistance to disease.

ESI is a training program for puppies designed to enhance their ability to identify and react to specific scents. Starting on day three until day sixteen, each day a new scent is introduced to each puppy.
ESI is proven to be beneficial for: early brain stimulation, nose awareness, and confidence building.
Puppy Toddler Curriculum
Starting at 3 weeks old we move into a more advanced curriculum with our puppies. We begin the daily “10 step puppy handing”. This is to ensure our puppies are exposed to various types of touching and handling.
This includes covering their eyes, booping the nose, rubbing their gums, inside their mouth, around the collar, tummy, down back, tug on tail and ears, and tapping toe nails.

At this time we also begin introducing various activities to the puppies including: new sounds, sights, textures, and uneven surfaces.
We believe that following this curriculum helps empower the puppies to become confident as well as teaches them the world is safe, people are kind and dogs are friendly.
Temperament Evaluation ~ 7 weeks
When it comes to puppies temperaments
there are two types of traits.

Stable traits:
-
assertiveness
-
motivation
-
energy level
-
prey drive
-
tenderhearted
-
human focus
These traits are built in the dog, they are innate... How they are wired, if you will.
These are the things we look for when preforming our temperament test evaluations to inform and educate the families to match accordingly.
And
Adjustable traits:
-
confidence
-
touch tolerance
-
nerve strength
-
sound and sight sensitivity
These traits are trainable. They are traits that can be improved upon when worked through correctly. With these traits, you can teach the puppy that the world is safe, and they can trust people.
When a puppy is raised in the appropriate manner, they learn confidence, and compliance.
